BBC School Report - Written Report on Dreams

There are a lot of theories, beliefs and superstitions about dreams, what they are, what causes them, and what they mean. This beliefs and theories come from all the way back to the ancient civilizations Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome.

The source of the wisdom of Greeks was the oracle at Delphi, with an impact on even the most important decisions in the country. Not everyone realized that the oracle’s prophecies were based on dreams. Dreams played an important role in military as well as family decisions and impacted the development of the ancient world. The Greek system of dream interpretation wasn’t concerned only with predicting the future but also used to ensure prosperity in one’s life.

The Egyptians viewed dreams as messages from gods. In temples dedicated to Serapis, where special dream interpreters lived, Egyptians celebrated rituals, gave sacrifices and recited prayers in hopes that their dreams would reveal fragments of the future. The dreams of the Pharaohs attracted the most attention, because they were seen as gods themselves. Because of that, it seemed perfectly natural that Gods would send those dreams and visions.

The roman tradition of dream interpretation was strongly drawn from the Greeks. It is rumored that an ancestor of Julius Cesar, Augustus, believed in the prophetic root of dreams so much that he made a law which stated that if anyone ever had a dream, they were to announce it at the local market of their town. In Rome, the importance of dreams was a widely discussed topic among scholars who proclaimed that dreams are inspired by our own passions, emotions and experiences of everyday life and did not come from gods.

There are also different types of dreams, all slightly different from one another. Some of these are:

Daydream: this is classified as a level between sleep and weakness. Researches show that people daydream about 70 to 120 minutes a day. It occurs when you let your imagination carry you away during waking time. As your mind begins to wander and your level of awareness decreases, you lose yourself in your imagined scenario and fantasy.

False awakening dream: false awakening dreams are when a person wakes up, finishes normal day activities, and wakes up again only to find that all that happened was just a dream.

Lucid dreams: Lucid dreams occur when you realize you are dreaming. Most dreamers wake themselves up once they realize that they are not awake. Others have cultivated the skill to remain in the lucid state of dreaming and become an active participant in their own dreams, making decisions in them and influencing its outcome without awakening.

Recurring dreams: recurring dreams are the ones which recur with little changes each time. These dreams may be positive, but mostly they are nightmarish in content. Dreams may recur because a conflict in the dream remains unresolved or ignored. Once you find a resolution to the problem, your recurring dreams will cease.

Signal Dreams: these help you solve problems or make decisions in your waking life.

These are some facts about dreams which I found in the internet:

  1. One-third of your life is spent sleeping.
  2. In an average lifetime, you would have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. That is more than 2,100 days spent in a different realm!
  3. Blind people do dream. Whether visual images appear in their dreams depend on whether they were blind at birth or became blind later in life. But vision is not the only sense that constitutes a dream. Sound, tactility, and smell become hypersensitive for the blind and their dreams are based on these senses.
  4. Five minutes after the end of the dream, half the content is forgotten. After ten minutes, 90% is lost.
  5. The word dream stems from the Middle English word, dream which means “joy” and “music”.
  6. Studies have shown that your brain waves are more active when you are dreaming than when we are awake.
  7. Toddlers do not dream about themselves. They do not appear in their own dreams until the age of 3 or 4.
  8. If you are snoring, then you cannot be dreaming.
  9. Nightmares are common in children, typically beginning at around age 3 and occurring up to age 7-8.
  10. According to a research study, the most common setting for dreams is your own house.

There are a lot of people who find meanings of things which appear in dreams. Here are some of those meanings:

Backpacking

To dream that you are backpacking symbolizes your self-sufficiency and survival skills. You may be reflecting on all the obstacles and adversities that you have overcome.

Dagger

To see or use a dagger in your dream represents some “cutting remark”. Perhaps you feel that you have been stabbed in the back.

Facebook

To dream about your Facebook page represents your desires to expand your social circle. You need to reach out to others in a more direct and personal way. It is time to get out there and experience life.

Habit

To dream about an old habit or a habit that you recently quit is an expression of your subconscious desires. Your suppressed urges are making themselves known via your dreams.

Jack Frost

To see Jack Frost in your dream represents someone who is cold or distant. It may also refer to someone who can’t take criticism. You don’t know how to relate to this person. Alternatively, Jack Frost is symbolic of winter time and the memories that time of the year brings.

Land

To see land in your dream represents your need to be more grounded or down to earth. You are looking for a strong foundation and some stability. Alternatively, the dream may be a metaphor for something that you have “landed” as in a job, a part in a play, etc.

A dream about pepperoni means you wish your life was more exciting. You may feel deprived of something, such as love, friendship or emotional support.

To dream that you are in rage is symbolic of your bad temper, negative outbursts, and suppressed anger. You need to express your inner strengths and desires.

Taco

To see or eat a taco in your dream signifies warmth and comfort. Consider the type of taco shell, as this is analogous to your demeanor and attitude in your waking life. If it is a hard shell taco, then it represents your brash and “hard” exterior. If it is a soft shell taco, then it signifies your adaptability and yielding persona.

Valentine’s Day

To dream about Valentine’s day indicates a new and blossoming relationship. Your current relationship will also take a positive turn. The dream may also be an ultimate expression of love for you. Perhaps you need to tell someone who you love them.
