CAS Students visited Migrant School with MCF - written by Jack Howatson, Year 12 IB CAS Student
Before we went to the Migrant School on Saturday 13th June 2015, the whole class came together and understood that we would all need to play different roles in making this lesson happen. We came to an agreement that we would teach the kids different means of transport seen around Beijing. This included: buses, taxis, cars, the subway, school buses etc. In addition to this, we decided that we would combine the previous lesson (on color) in order to make more complex sentences for the Chinese students. For example, they would be able to say ‘the car is blue’ as opposed to just knowing how to say car.
This would further promote their education because they are learning basic English sentence structures such as putting a definite article (the) in front of the sentence and also introducing the usage of verbs such as ‘is. ‘
Knowing this, each pair in the group made a separate worksheet in an effort to have enough resources to teach the students for the entirety of the lesson time, the different worksheets and their effectiveness are as follows:
Casey and Nnaemeka: Designed a worksheet that was used for sentences; It wasn’t about teaching the students how to learn the words, but how to apply them. I liked this worksheet because it introduced them to 3 different levels of English which were: just stating a means of transport, ‘this is a car’ this furthered to ‘this is a blue car’ and finally to ‘this car is blue and fast’ (underlined words indicate where the children have to write their own words.
Jack: I constructed a word search which was, I think, very effective because they would be looking for the word in the word search and repeating it in their head, looking for the word will promote them to remember it. This would also promote their ability to spell, because unless they had the ideal spelling, they wouldn’t be able to find the correct wording in the word search.
Tiffany: She constructed a type of ‘match up’ exercise that involved finding the correct Chinese word and matching it with the English one. This was good because it gave an overall introduction to the topic and allowed them to learn the words and refer back to that page.
The lesson itself was generally positive, we perhaps had too few people (only 5 of us teaching the class on the day) however it was okay because everyone’s Chinese was at an ability good enough to teach. Next time, we will bring some candies or other means of prizes for the kids because they usually really like rewards for good English.

BSB students visit the Migrant English Foundation twice a month and teach English to poor migrant Chinese students.
