Every year we begin teaching Maths with revisiting the place value understanding of our children, gradually moving from smaller to bigger numbers and then from whole numbers to fractions and decimals.

Year 4 started their new school year with a new supply of Maths equipment. It is a wonderful way to support the topic of Place value. We write numbers using only ten digits. Where we place them in the numbers is important. How many different ways of presenting a 3- or 4-digit number can you think of? Write numbers in figures, in words, use counters… For those who need some support, there is now a wide choice of brand new equipment such as Base 10, place value mats, multi-coloured arrows and numbers cards, variety of counters, number fans and building blocks and many more.

We tried to express some of the numbers using different equipment and see what happens when numbers have no tens or hundreds in them. Children enjoyed an opportunity to complete "show me" and "build a number" tasks. With such a good choice of things to play with, we will all succeed in learning this fundamental concept.
