In Year 6 we are doing the topic ‘SURVIVORS’ and looking at natural disasters.

We kicked off the new topic by having a ‘Wow Day’ and spent the whole day in our house teams learning about natural disasters. Volcanoes were the focus of one of the activities and we learnt about eruptions and lava and the destruction they can cause. We baked delicious cupcakes that looked like volcanoes and decorated them with molten lava and spewing ash. Wildfires were another disaster we learnt about and we painted beautiful pictures of fiery landscapes. We used black paper and vibrant acrylic paint and used cardboard templates to create silhouettes which were very effective. We used drama to recreate earthquakes and practised earthquake drills. It was quite scary hiding under tables and getting to safety when the alarm sounded and gave us a good idea of what experiencing an earthquake could be like.

Our final activity was raft building and we made rafts to escape from flooding. We worked together as a house team to create incredibly imaginative rafts and tied together bottles, wood and various other bits and pieces we could find. The day ended with the rafts being tested and we managed to persuade Miss Doherty to test them out. We all gathered around the pool and watched as Miss Doherty sat on each raft to see how successful they were. Some of the teams had made very effective rafts and she barely got wet at all; one raft fell apart and she fell in completely! We had a fantastic day working together in our houses and it inspired us to learn about lots of natural disasters. We are continuing with our topic this term and seeing if we are SURVIVORS!!
