Primary Student Council - Being Ambitious Personally and Socially
Aim of the Council: To encourage a shared responsibility for aspects of day-to-day life at school and to develop a caring and co-operative community
Since early September, our 2016 -17 Student Council has been meeting every Monday to discuss ways in which they can make our school even better and to show that we care about others in our world.
Some of the projects the Council members have been working on so far are as follows:
- Help for Haiti Project: The Council wanted to show their support for the victims of Hurricane Matthew, so organised a non-uniform day fundraiser. The Primary School raised more than CNY 26,000, which will be donated to UNICEF.
- Personal Development: Volunteers from the Council received training in meeting visitors and learning how to greet people in a formal way. They then put this into practice when a distinguished visitor from Juilliard, Erin Wight, visited the school.
- Leadership Skills: The Student Councilors wanted to find ways to ensure that all students feel that our school is a friendly place so from 14th – 18th October they are organising a ‘Friendship Week’. They have invited other students from Years 3-6 to join them in providing a range of fun playground games for all the students from Reception – Year 6. The games will take place at break times.
- Presenting Skills: On Friday 18th November the Council will be presenting at the three Primary Assemblies to outline the importance of being kind, friendly and open to new challenges. This will give them an opportunity to develop skills in presenting to an audience.
Being part of the Student Council is a great opportunity for the students to not only develop a range of personal skills but to also encourage them in others. From time-to-time they will be organising sub-committees to help them with future projects and to involve their peers in being empowered academically, socially and personally.
