Sport Update

  • U13 FOBISIA
  • Sport at BSB 2014-2015

Dear BSB Sport Followers,

Welcome back from the short Chinese New Year Holiday. The first week back after the New Year is always a time to prepare, organize, & re-confirm for the one of the busiest Sport times we have at BSB, which is the month of March 2016. During this month, we have 3 scheduled trips - U13 FOBISIA, FOBISIA Golf and ACAMIS Swimming.  Our Season 3 sports have all begun for U19 Football, U14 Basketball and U11 T-ball, and our next scheduled sport trips are holding try-outs for U19 ACAMIS football and Primary FOBISIA. The sport schedule up and until Spring Break on March 25th seems to have something going every day of the week, which isn’t much different than the regular year, but is also inclusive of other school events and trips on top of it all.

The first scheduled sport trip is our U13 FOBISIA team which departs Beijing on Wednesday 9th March in the afternoon for Bangkok, Thailand to participate in the annual games hosted by St. Andrews Green Valley (STAGV). This is not only the biggest squad we have entered, (16 boys & 15 girls) but one of the best FOBISIA teams we have had in secondary while I have been at BSB. I jokingly expressed to our squad as we were taking their formal picture for the games program (see squad photo above), that I would be shocked if we didn’t come home with at least 5 trophies from the 6 opportunities for swimming, athletics, basketball, & football over the 3 day tournament. Our team will come home on Tuesday 15th March.

Please see our U13 FOBISIA BSB team photo above and the team members’ names below.

  • 3rd Row, L-R: David, Aaliyah, YoungJae, Laetitia, Fabian, Rocio, Fred, Zoe, Johannes, Charlotte
  • 2nd Row, L-R: Philip, Stacey, Darcy, Lola, Jack, Lara, Kai, Marguerite, Noah, Stephenie, Matthew
  • 1st Row, L-R: Luka, Emelyne, Joe, Chiana, Raphael, Lucia, Henrik, Lia, Jackie
  • Missing: Joel Nestler

FOBISA Golf is a competition we are participating in for the first year. Mr Dion MacIver is taking 6 students to Malaysia, with the tournament being hosted by one of our FOBISA B2 Group Schools Kolej Tuanku Ja Afar (KTJ) from March 16th – 17th. As we look to 2016-2017 academic year, we are interested in pushing our golf program further by expanding this into an all seasonal offering (offered as a sport for Season 1/2/3/4) much like our swim program. Good luck to our FOBISIA Golf squad at KTJ!

Our final sport trip in March, is our ACAMIS Swim squad, which for the second year in a row, is participating in the annual ACAMIS Swim Invite event being hosted by Dulwich College Suzhou (DCSZ), and the Suzhou Singapore International School (SSIS). Dates for this meet are March 18th  & 19th. BSB is entering double the amount of swimmers we did last year in Nanjing at 28 in total. It gives me so much pride to report on the many great things our swim programme has achieved these past 3 years under the direction of Mr. Ali Armstrong and his team. We have well over 150 swimmers who are active members of our AquaBears Swim team in 2015-2016. Leading up to the ACAMIS event, BSB is entering three straight local meets, with the first being hosted by HISB on Saturday 27th February. On this day BSB will be entering 64 swimmers, again a record for a meet we have entered and another highlight of how far along our swim program has developed.  Good luck to our ACAMIS Swim squad at DCSZ & SSIS.

As Season 3 is well under way, this marks the time we need to make squad selections for U19 ACAMIS football & Primary FOBISIA. Our U19 ACAMIS squad looks to be one of the best teams we have put together for both boys and girls. Our boys have won the Gold Division title 3 years in a row and look to make it the fourth time with the team that is shaping up in try-outs/trainings. The girls have finished runner-up in the past two years hoping to win back the title which they did last when BSB hosted ACAMIS Football/Soccer in April of 2013. The squad will be selected/announced Monday 29th February. If any parents have any questions concerning squad selections they can email me directly or the respected coaches: U19 boys-Adam Worsley at adam.worsley@britishschool.org.cn & U19 girls-Emma Langham at emma.langham@britishschool.org.cn . The U19 ACAMIS Football teams will travel to Dalian on Thursday April 14th and return back to Beijing on Sunday April 17th.

Interesting enough, our last Sport trip of the year, but for sure the key event for many sport players/participants in primary looks to be shaping up into another very competitive try-out.  As I write this, we have over 80 students signed up to try out for the 3 teams (U11/U10/U9-Y6/Y5/Y4) which will begin the week of 22nd February within scheduled PE lessons. We will announce the squad the week of 21st March and trainings will begin after Spring Break the week of April 4th. If any parents would have any questions with primary FOBISIA you can email me or feel free to contact the Head of Primary PE-Ms. Joanne North at joanne.north@britishschool.org.cn .

As always, do feel free to contact me anytime and I look forward to announce some very good results in the coming weeks/months. Finally, I wanted to formally share some figures (please see below “Sport at BSB 2014-2015”) from last academic year which again highlights BSB’s growth within sport and creating more and better opportunities for all of our students regardless of their sport level or ability. This is the result of the incredible work from so many students, parents, and the overall BSB Sport community.
