This week the Science Department took part in STEAM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) week.  KS3 lessons were planned to incorporate and Science and Engineering theme and  the week ending with a STEAM fair.

KS3 lessons were planned to engage and inspire students with a more hands on approach to learning. Students in Year 7 spend the week designing and making different types of Rockets. Year 9 were asked to design a half pipe roller coaster with a loop of a minimum height of 40cm that a marble to roll through with out falling off and Year 8 took part in an egg drop challenge.

The Year 8s took part in a challenge in the MPR room to build a devise that would time 60 seconds exactly. We had a number of different ideas and designs ranging from the elaborate to simple ideas based on hourglasses. In the end just two groups,  one from each session were successful.

Throughout the week Secondary students have been visiting Primary classes to demonstrate mini Science demos to excite and inspire the younger students into Science. The Secondary students did an excellent job and all the experiments were well received by the Primary students.

On the Friday the week ended with a STEAM fair at lunchtime. The Science/DT corridor was filled with students and each room had something different to offer. The Science department were strongly represented with demonstrations using liquid nitrogen and whiz bang chemistry. Some students also helped out carrying out fun practical demos. The Art and DT department carried out light painting and I.T. gave students the opportunity to create 3D printed designs and use Minecraft.
