Year 5 – A great start!

Year 5 has had a wonderful start to the year and everyone has settled in nicely. We have been very busy and have accomplished a great deal in the few weeks we have been back to school.

We are Going Global in Topic which means children have been exploring different countries, how we are all connected and how we relate to each other. We had great fun on our WOW day creating our own countries and then simulating trade with other countries.  The children realised early on how important it was for countries to have goods to trade and why we have richer and poorer countries.

Hand-in–hand with this in Science, our focus has been on micro-organisms.  Children have been discussing germs and disease and discovering ways to prevent the spread of germs.  They have loved looking at micro-organisms under the microscope and seeing what they look like.

In English and Maths we have worked hard as well. With a focus on Place value, addition and subtraction strategies in Maths.  Children have been able to use various methods to arrive at an answer - paper work, manipulative materials, computer activities and games. In English children have worked on discussion texts by reading through exemplar texts, memorising them and then beginning to write their own.
