Our Student Council was set up in the beginning of Term 1 to create an opportunity for the students to influence positive change in our school community.

The Council is made up of representatives from Year Three to Six, including two children from the German Primary School. It has been ably led by the four Year Six members, Joseph (Head Boy), Scarlett (Head Girl), Ruth (House Captain) and Erin. They have taken turns in the roles of Chair and Secretary; setting the agenda and taking notes as a record of the meeting.

The Council’s commitment and efforts so far are very impressive. They meet each week during Monday lunchtimes and devote time to discussing issues and organising events. The members report back to the teachers and children in their respective year groups and communicate any concerns or problems back to the Council.

In Term 1 all representatives received training in the social skills of meeting and greeting important visitors. These were put into practice when Erin Wight, a distinguished visitor and Curriculum Specialist from The Juilliard School, visited BSB.

Another activity they were involved with was setting up a Friendship Fortnight, which meant organising and playing a variety of fun chasing games in the playground. Following this they performed in our Friday Assemblies for all the year groups to teach the other children about the importance of kindness.

A problem was brought to the Council in December in that some children wanted to be able to play Pokémon cards in school. After much discussion the Council members agreed to run a one-off Pokémon Club at break times. However in order to join students needed to make a donation to our Christmas charity, Krankin’ Thru China.

Other fundraising events organised by the Council include a Help for Haiti non-uniform day, a Christmas cake sale and a Chinese New Year disco. So far this year we have raised over 6000 RMB.

Council members developed a survey for each class so they could discover what fellow students thought of the food in our canteen. The results were collated by Scarlett and Samuel and they reported the information to the BSB Food Committee.

Last week the Council, with the kind help of other Year Six students – Anny, Talya, Sam and Coleman, spent time practising their tour guide skills. On Friday they worked together in pairs taking the FOBISIA School Principals on a tour of the school. The visiting principals commented that the tour guides were absolutely brilliant. They felt the children were extremely polite and very articulate. One Principal said ‘I would like to take them back to my school to do tours there.’

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful Council members: Year 3 –Tiger & Jenny; Year 4/GK3 - Mika, Zoe & Pia; Year 5/GK4 –Julia & Samuel; Year 6 - Ruth, Erin, Scarlett and Joseph; they have worked extremely hard this year.

Update from: Ms. Adele Cory, Deputy Head of Primary
