On 11th April, BSB welcomed Juilliard alumni artist Andrea Fisher for the day.
She started off the day with an interactive assembly in KS2, where she performed a variety of repertoire and talked about career. Students had a great time and asked lots of questions, such as how long she has been playing the flute and how many flutes she is able to play. We were all surprised to learn that the answer is more than twenty flutes from all over the world. She not only plays them, but also owns them.
She spent the rest of the morning in rehearsal with our advanced flutes in the Secondary school. They worked on a flute ensemble piece with her as the conductor.
After lunch, she spent time with the Year 6 flute PIPs students and worked on their Music Circus pieces with them. Both groups of students had a great time in these smaller groups working with Andrea, asking her questions and receiving performing techniques.
Her day at BSB culminated in a KS3 interactive assembly, but it was different than the morning one because our Secondary flutists joined her and performed their flute ensemble piece “Beauty and the Beast”. BSB staff Ms Ryan, Ms Star, and I performed with her in two chamber music pieces. Andrea also showed us a video of her playing a duet with herself on the flute and the organ and performed a stunning solo flute piece entitled “Earth”.
Well done to all BSB staff and students who performed in this assembly, as there was very little rehearsal time with our guest, but the end result was beautiful. It was a great opportunity to perform with a professional musician, and we would all like to thank Andrea for visiting our school. Please enjoy the pictures from Andrea’s day at BSB!
