I joined The British School of Beijing, Shunyi in August 2012 as a Primary School Counsellor after I graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a Master in Orthopedagogy. Prior to working in China, I worked at a certified Dutch behavioural and learning centre where I conducted psychological assessments and provided cognitive behaviour therapy to children with behaviour, social and emotional difficulties. In addition to this, I provided support and pedagogical advice to parents and teachers. I bring experience and knowledge of interpreting psychological assessments and implementing the strategies and results in a school setting.
Before I started my career as a school counsellor I worked as a Primary school teacher across various grades. That’s where I became highly interested in the children who displayed challenging behaviour. My teaching experience and skills provide me an understanding of school related problems and available opportunities within a school setting, which are invaluable in my position as a school counsellor.
My role as school counsellor is to help children from Nursery through Year 6 with behaviour, social and emotional issues that interfere with their school work to become confident and feel included. I give children tools that help them to cope with any challenges they may face in life which contribute to their academic and personal growth. I use a range of counselling theories and techniques, including cognitive-behaviour therapy, narrative therapy and play therapy. Besides individual counselling I develop and facilitate group counselling support focussing on social skills, behavioural issues, impulsive behaviour, anti-bullying/assertiveness and communication training.
