Jim Hartland

Head of Psychology

I have been teaching in China for over 12 years at various different levels, from kindergarten, through middle school to university and business level English.  I spent my first two years at BSB teaching English as an Additional Language – a course designed to help those students with weaker English to improve and access the curriculum. From this, I moved into mainstream English before setting up and running our Psychology department which is now well established.

I have been at BSB since 2008 and each year seems to be a busy one. I am excited about continuing to develop our IB Psychology programme and have recently become an IB examiner.

My Head of Year role is also constantly developing – this year, with a new cohort of exciting Year 7 students, I’m looking forward to working with them to help them learn new skills and broaden their horizons.

My biggest passion at the moment is playing squash, a game I never tire of and I am constantly badgering my colleagues to play with me! With two young daughters, I rarely get much free time, but I do enjoy reading when they finally go to sleep.
