Michael Pinnock

Michael Andrew Winston Pinnock (3)

Head of Year 10, Science Teacher

I am from London where I studied Chemistry at the University of Greenwich and have been teaching for 24 years, mainly in the North East of England after completing my B.Ed at The University of Sunderland. As well as being a Science Teacher I have held a variety of other roles including Head of Year, Head of House and Head of Department.

Over the past few years I have attended courses and gained extensive CPD at the National Science Learning Centre. This culminated in me being joint guest speaker for the National STEM Centre annual conference, hosted at the Natural History Museum in London and was nominated for an Enthuse Secondary Science Leader Award. In July 2013, I was one of the guest speakers involved in the launch of the White Paper “The Future influence of STEM subjects” at the House of Commons. And most recently, June 2014, I was invited as a Leading Science Teacher 2012-13, back to the House of Commons to honour this year’s crop of Secondary Science Leaders.

I believe that the opportunity to be involved in these unique experiences impacts dramatically on my everyday teaching and learning in school, as it allows me to stay up to date with recent research, national educational policy and teaching and learning techniques.

I have a passion for school trips and have organised many extra-curricular national and international trips in all of the schools I have taught in. These include trips to London: Paris; Barcelona; New York and most recently CERN in Switzerland, where through my school visits I have become a Teacher Ambassador for CERN.

My time here at BSB has been the most productive and enjoyable in my career to date. Not only have I been able to continue to provide my students with the opportunity to visit Geneva and CERN (BSB still being the only school in China to visit The Large Hadron Collider) but it has also provided me with the ultimate in CPD with a week-long residential course in delivering STEAM provided by The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA. I am currently the STEAM Lead Coordinator here at BSB.
