Murdoch Lan Mackay (2)

Science Teacher

I attended the University of Hertfordshire where I studied Molecular Biology and Genetics. After graduating I went on to work for 5 years as a Research and Development scientist for a large pharmaceutical company where my role was to develop cell based assays to test the effectiveness of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins against specific cancer cell lines. During my time as a scientist I visited schools in the community giving students hands on experience with cutting edge biotechnology and it was while doing this that I made my decision to become a teacher.

I gained my QTS with a specialism in Biology while working at a school in Reading where I continued to work as a science teacher for two years. In 2012 I made the decision to move to China to work at a Chinese high school in Ningbo, Zhejiang province where I enjoyed a productive 4 years teaching IBDP Biology. When I heard about the position at BSB Shunyi I jumped at the chance to work at a truly international school with a reputation for excellence in Beijing. I am passionate about science and passionate about learning and I am excited to work in a school with professionals who share my passion and drive.

I made the move to China 4 years ago and it has afforded me the opportunity to explore much of the world but there is still so much more to see and do.  My family are all chefs and while I am more comfortable in the laboratory than I am in a kitchen, I enjoy experimenting with food and new dishes. I do my best to keep fit, I enjoy running, hiking and being outdoors, especially outdoors in Scotland, which I still feel has some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer. And I must say; it is a beauty to which the weather only adds and not subtracts!
