Seventeen high school students at the British International School of Boston were honored this week for earning top marks on the 2015 IGCSE exams last spring, including four “Top in the USA” awards for students earning the highest marks in the country on a single subject exam.

The awards were handed out to students during a special event with Cambridge International Examinations Regional Director Mark Cavone, who discussed with students, staff and parents the many benefits of the IGCSE program and how it can impact students’ success in college, university and careers.

The Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds, and is recognized around the world as proof of academic achievement. At the British International School of Boston, students go through the IGCSE program during the first two years of high school, U.S. Grades 9 and 10, with IGCSE exams in the spring of Grade 10.

The school has a strong history of success on IGCSE exams, and continued a high level of achievement in 2015.

On Tuesday, 17 students were recognized for especially strong performances in the 2015 IGCSE exams, with some earning multiple awards.

Four students earned “Top in the USA” Awards, recognizing these students for gaining the highest standard mark in the United States for a single subject.

Another student earned a “High Achievement” award for IGCSE Drama, which recognizes students earning the top in the U.S. exam marks for less common IGCSE subjects.

Fifteen students earned Cambridge Scholar Awards, which recognizes high marks across several IGCSE subject exams.

The students were presented with award certificates Tuesday by Mr. Cavone of CIE, who commented on the students great achievements in the IGCSE program. Mr. Cavone said the IGCSE is strong preparation for future study, and is recognized around the world as strong preparation for the rigorous academics in university.

BISB Headmaster Mr. Wiseman said he was very impressed by the achievements of BISB’s students.

“I was deeply impressed by the level of success of our Year 12 students in their IGCSE exams last year, and was delighted to have spent the afternoon Tuesday celebrating their success,’ he said.  “I hope that this significant success will serve as a reminder to our community- as it did to me- of the strength of our academic offering and the many benefits and opportunities our curriculum brings to our students.”

IGCSE exams are taken in Year 11 across all subject areas, from history, English and world languages, to arts, sciences and mathematics. Students at BISB study for an average of nine subjects. Exams are graded externally and awarded marks against a standardized criteria.

In 2015, half of Year 11 students at BISB earned five A*-A grades, 16 more than earned the same marks in 2014. Eighty-eight percent of BISB students earned five A*-C grades on the 2015 exams.
