    Maurice Fakoury

    Head of World Languages

    Maurice Fakoury

Languages have been central to my upbringing, education and subsequent career choices, and have opened doors for me to a range of opportunities throughout my life. I have always considered a teaching career as my ultimate aim, but I felt that in order to become the type of teacher that I aspired to be, I would require experience outside of an academic environment before fulfilling that ambition.

I was fortunate enough upon graduation from the University of Edinburgh to fall into my first career as an Expedition Manager and Leader with a Gap Year organization, and a tour manager for a boutique travel company in Europe. Thereafter, I became a journalist for a number of years, but eventually decided that the cut and thrust of Fleet Street was not for me.

Teaching has provided me with a sense of purpose as well as satisfaction that I am contributing in a meaningful way. I relish the opportunities that are constantly presented in school life, as well as the chance to help young people broaden their own horizons. After a few years of teaching in London, my taste for adventure and desire to head overseas again led me to BISB.

When my three daughters were all school age, I headed back to school at the University of Vermont to complete a Post Baccalaureate Certification Program in Elementary Education. I taught 5th and 6th grade in Vermont for five years, and then traveled with my family to Berlin, Germany to teach at the John F. Kennedy Schule. When I returned to the USA I wanted to gain more administrative experience, and took on the role as administrator and director for a Vermont, non-profit, after-school program. While working as director, I earned my TESL certification, and am thrilled to be back in an international school setting working to support EAL students.

While working in Vermont and in Berlin I chaired several school committees in Math, English, and Student Support, and I am proud to be a licensed educator with HQT (Highly Qualified Teacher) Status.

Before coming to BISB in fall 2015, I had been working in a school in South Wales for just under 7 years now as a Music teacher as well as head of key stage 4 over the last two years. Before this I worked in a variety of challenging inner city school in Cardiff and the surrounding areas.

Both sides of my career so far have offered me many unique challenges which I have enjoyed immensely. In my schools I have enjoyed the extra curricular side of my job, being able to perform many different styles of music in summer and Christmas concerts as well as creating and performing three musicals written by myself and the pupils together before putting popular rock and pop songs into the music. I think these shows are my biggest achievement in school.

Coming from a family of teachers I knew from an early age I wanted to be a teacher.  I graduated from Leeds University and have been a teacher of art since 2001. I worked at two schools in the North of England near Leeds prior to moving to BISB in 2007. In my mid-20s, alongside my teaching, I owned my own boutique where I sold accessories which included hats that I made myself.

I have more than 10 years teaching experience across the whole primary age-range and have held positions of responsibility including Key Stage One Coordinator and Planning, Record-Keeping and Assessment Coordinator.  This experience was gained across three West London primary schools and I was lucky enough to have six months of private study and experience, in a range of elementary schools in Indianapolis, Indiana.

My two biggest passions in education are music and Early Years education.  When a position became available at BISB that combined the two, I was very excited to apply.

I graduated from The University of Worcester with first class BSC Hons in Sports Science with Associated Physical Education. Following this, I enrolled in a PGCE course at Loughborough University, allowing me to become a fully qualified Physical Education teacher. Before arriving here in Boston my teaching career began at Granville Community Sports College in England. Following a wonderful two years, I decided to take the leap into international education and have since been honoured to work around the world, from Doha, in Qatar, to the capital of Russia, where I took on the role as Head of PE at the International School of Moscow. My most recent position took me back to England where I worked as part of the ACS Hillingdon International School team. Having dreamt of living and working in the United States, it is an absolute pleasure to be here as part of the BISB community.
