A Student's Typical Day - Early Learning

  • A Student

7:50 Arrivals

Children arrive in the classroom and are greeted by the adults and their peers. They are supported in organizing their belongings and attempting some form of self registration (e.g. finding their picture and copying their name). They may engage in some initial exploration of the environment either independently or facilitated by an adult.

8:15 Morning Meeting

This is an essential time of the day for Early Learning students to help them transition to a new day of learning.  During morning meetings students go through activities and routines with the purpose of building a strong community and providing students with a sense of comfort and safety at school.  Each morning, students and teachers gather together in a circle for twenty to thirty minutes and interact with one another during four purposeful components:

  1. Greeting - students and teachers greet one another by name and practice offering hospitality.
  2. Sharing - students share information about important events in their lives. Listeners often offer empathetic comments or ask clarifying questions.
  3. Group Activity - everyone participates in a brief, lively activity that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice social and academic skills (examples: counting number of students in the class, talking about the weather, learning about the days of the weeks and months)
  4. Morning Message - this is an oral or written message crafted to help students focus on the work they'll do in school that day.

8:45 Free choice exploration (indoor and outdoor) and Specialist classes

Children are given the opportunity to explore authentic, engaging and enticing experiences both indoor and outdoor environments. This learning is constructed through the children's own interests and facilitated and extended through teacher/adult interactions.  During this time students are engaged in literacy and numeracy activities.  Furthermore, at this time of the day students usually visit specialist classes such as Physical Education, Library and Swimming.

10:00 Snack time

We share a healthy fruit snack every day. Children are encouraged to sit and eat in a social setting. Families are asked to send in fruit every day for both morning and afternoon snacks. (Please no sugary snacks, drinks or salty crisps.)
