    Ali (Alison) Matthews

    Foundation Stage 2

    Ali (Alison) Matthews

I grew up in the South East of England (Kent) with my parents and older sister. I’ve always been interested in how children learn, and my first degree in Psychology gave me a great insight into this. During this time, I lived in London for three years and developed an admiration for big cities and all the exciting things they have to offer. My fascination with new cities continued when I took a gap year after my degree and explored South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. I cannot wait to move to Chicago and discover all it has to offer. Having visited briefly last year, I loved the diverse mix of music and arts around the city. Having played the drums as a child/teenager, I have a love for live music and am really excited about the Julliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Program  the school has. I am an amateur runner and look forward to finding new routes around all the beautiful parks in Chicago and along the lakefront.

I am originally from London, however, at the age of 9, I moved to Belgium where I lived until I was 16. I then moved back to the UK to continue my further education. Once I graduated, I moved to Qatar to start my international teaching career. After 2 years in Qatar, I moved to Dubai where I have been living to the past 5 years. I am a keen traveler, and I love to explore new places. I can't wait to move to Chicago to experience all it has to offer. I also love cooking, and I love to experiment and cook new things.

I grew up in Lincoln, England, and I have a great passion for music and can play the piano and ukulele. I also love traveling and make the most of any opportunity to see the world. I have also visited parts of Africa, Asia, Europe and the US. I moved to Chicago last year and just love living here. Every night of the week there is something exciting happening. My favorite thing to do is to see live music and go out to the amazing restaurants.

My love affair with America began after spending a wonderful GAP year in Providence, Rhode Island working as an intern at Amos House, a homeless shelter I began my teaching career in a small village school in Scotland before moving to an inner city school in South East London. I learned a great deal from my time in both schools. However, the desire to move to the States was still burning strong. I had heard about Nord Anglia Education schools and its reputation as being a leader in education. I was inspired and decided to apply for the opportunity to work in one of the schools. Receiving the phone call to say I was moving to Chicago was incredible and the experience has not disappointed.

I was born and raised in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and I love my hometown. I spend the summers visiting the museums and the lakefront. When I'm not exploring the city you can usually find me curled up with a good book and a cup of coffee.

I believe there's no limit to what students can achieve because as long as a child has the passion and the drive to make their dreams come true, they can achieve whatever the set their minds to. They may need some guidance along the way, which is where I come in, but the true potential lies within them, and I make it my mission to do everything within my power to ensure they achieve whatever goal they've set for themselves.

I am from Chicago, IL. One thing I love about Chicago is the ethnic diversity. It's amazing how many cultures are represented and loved by people of different backgrounds.

I believe there's no limit to what every student can achieve. The more you achieve, the more intelligent, humble, respectful and insightful you become.

This beautiful city of Chicago is where I was born and raised, in the Ravenswood neighborhood. I come from a large, close-knit family of six and have an even larger amount of extended family members of which most live in León, Guanajuato, México, where both my parents are from. In my spare time I love spending time with my family and friends; exploring new places to eat, participating in community service projects with my sorority, dancing and more! After graduating in May 2008 from Loyola University Chicago, I continued working in retail and enjoyed traveling. Since joining BISC-LP in 2009, I’ve assisted in classes from Nursery to Year 2 and in the Spanish Language Department for Key Stage 2; I’ve had so much fun with my students and have developed great relationships with them and the parents!

Every student learns differently, whether it is through hands-on activities or visual aids. It’s from day one of meeting our students that we get to know them and their interests and from there we use that information to help develop more personalized lessons for them. This year I look forward to working in Reception alongside Mr. Tomlinson, and the rest of the Early Years team, in making learning fun and engaging with creative activities, thinking "outside of the box"!
