This school year, British International School of Chicago launched The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme, which provides children with embedded arts curriculum that begins with music. Children focus on a repertoire of 12 iconic works that open the doors to different cultures, genres and historical periods. They engage with these works during their time at BISC through interactive activities in and out of the classroom.
With the introduction of the program, we have observed extraordinary progression of our Year 5 band. Most importantly, they are incredibly inspired and each day demonstrate genuine excitement to be learning an instrument. They have also been able to relate the notes learned studying Beethoven and Thelonious Monk to the works they are performing. After just seven weeks, the children are improvising using blues scale and accompanying each other using the 12 bar blues. As you can see from the picture above, the Year 5 band loves to jam! Spending time with our Juilliard mentors has also motivated the children to go after loftier performance goals.
The Year 5 band’s energy is electric, and we are eager to see how they further develop this school year.
