With two fantastic libraries, it’s clear we’re big on reading! That’s why we went all out for Literacy Week in March. Check out the activities our students took part in to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of reading and writing.

Extreme Reading Competition
Reading is fun, but it’s even more entertaining in out-of-the-box locations! We asked families to take photos of their children reading in exciting and unusual places and Tweet them to @BISCSouthLoop with the hashtag #BISCSLExtremeReading. The entries were extreme, indeed! See photos of the winners above: Lindsay (Nursery) taking in a book with her panda pal; Rania (Year 6) who managed to read a book while bungee jumping; and Sara (Year 2) who fit in a reading break between ballet moves. Teddy Bear Sleepover

What do a bunch of stuffed animals do overnight in a library? Children in Nursery and Reception found out after leaving their favorite toys at school for the Teddy Bear Sleepover! It turns out the toys didn’t sleep much; they were too busy paging through all the wonderful books that fill the Primary Library.

Author Visit

Wow! Primary children had the chance to meet Miriam Busch and Larry Day, the co-creators of the award-winning picture book “Lion, Lion”. Ms. Busch and Mr. Day visited our school to talk about what it’s like to write and illustrate books. Together, the children and authors read stories and even wrote one of their own!

Book Fair

What’s Literacy Week without a book fair? The Scholastic Book Fair returned to the Primary Library for three days of literary exploration. Families had the chance to browse and buy books before and after school.

Share a Story Day

Older children in the Primary School stopped by the Early Years Area to read a story to Nursery and Reception classes. The youngsters love visits from their older peers, so this was quite a treat.

Literary Diorama Building Challenge

How do students imagine their favorite books? In the Secondary School, high school freshmen each led a team of middle school students in the first-ever House Literary Diorama Building Challenge. The students used reusable and recyclable materials to create dioramas inspired by their most beloved books...in under 90 minutes. Congratulations to Benicio, Eleanor, Maya, Jack and Team Leader Cynthia for their winning diorama, which depicted "The Maze Runner". Major points for Rushmore House!

Book Dress-Up Day

Literacy Week culminated on Friday with a spirited celebration of our favorite literary characters. Students and staff across the school dressed up as Dorothy, Peter Pan, Paul Bunyan and other memorable book characters. Students with the most original and innovative costumes won House points.
