With college on the horizon, the entrance to High School is a thrilling time for students. High School opens doors to further opportunities for students to demonstrate their growing independence and pursue subjects that really appeal to their interests. The High School curriculum aims to support students’ holistic growth – academic, social and personal – through a robust program of lessons in and out of the classroom.

In the classroom, students pursue the International General Certificates of Secondary Education, the world’s most popular international qualification for 14- to 16-year olds. The curriculum encourages students to engage with a variety of subjects and make connections among them. Upon completion of this two-year program, students have developed skills in creative thinking, inquiry and problem solving.

Course Routes

In Years 10 & 11, students follow one of the three following course routes. At the start of Year 10, each student begins on the Honors or College Preparation route in each subject, depending on prior learning and attainment.

  1. Double Honors: Students study nine courses at the Honors Level plus Physical Education, U.S. Studies, Drama and Music. This route prepares students to pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in Years 12 & 13.
  2. Single Honors: Students study nine courses at the Honors or College Preparation Level plus Physical Education, U.S. Studies, Drama and Music. Students move on to pursue IB Certificates in Years 12 & 13.
  3. College Preparation: Students study nine courses at College Preparation Level plus Physical Education, U.S. Studies, Drama and Music, and pursue the BISC High School Diploma in Years 12 & 13.
Course Options

All students study Mathematics, English, Science (a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics), U.S. Studies, Music, Drama and Physical Education. Students also elect one course from each of the four groups below. The courses a student is pursuing in Spring Term of Year 11 will determine which route the student will take in Years 12 & 13.

Program Completion

At the end of the two-year program, students in Honors courses are assessed through standardized exams, marked by examining boards in England. Based on their results, students are externally awarded IGCSE certificates for individual subjects, which are useful benchmarks of performance at age 16. Students in College Preparation courses sit internal exams and assessments.

Homework & Assessment

Students use an online homework portal called ManageBac, which records homework assignments and also houses worksheets and other class resources. Each subject sets one homework assignment per week that requires approximately one hour.

Teachers communicate with families about student achievement and progress in four academic reports during the school year. In each report, the teacher describes students' academic and social development and lists targets in for the student to concentrate on before the next report. Our teachers are highly trained in estimating and setting academic targets that challenge student learning.

Advisory & Community Time

Every High School student is part of an Advisory group, led by a teacher (Advisor), that meets weekly to provide students with an opportunity to interact with peers in a structured and supervised environment, but outside of academic lessons. It’s also a chance for students to receive mentoring and guidance from their Advisor. Students follow a planned program of social and emotional learning that helps them acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage their lives now and in the future.

Students also take part in Community Time on Wednesday afternoons. Community Time prepares them for life after BISC South Loop by supporting their holistic development through varied activities, such as field trips directly related to their studies. There are also leadership opportunities, in-school workshops and numerous community service initiatives.
