Demelza Wheeler-Ozanne

Demelza Wheeler-Ozanne

Year 3 Teacher / Dean of Years 3-6

I have not only enjoyed teaching at British International School of Chicago since 2009, but the school has really helped me to develop as a professional. I am so excited to continue to educate, and learn, with the school.

I have always wanted to be a teacher, so I completed a master of arts degree English literature at Glasgow University and then immediately went to Strathclyde University to complete a post-graduate degree in Primary education. In Scotland, one of the schools I worked in was a rural school where I was part of the local council’s Assessment is for Learning working community. I attended meetings and helped our particular school develop their assessment strategies.

I had visited Chicago many times as a child, so when a job was advertised for BISC on a UK teaching website, I knew I had to apply. When I researched the school I was even more determined due to the premier education option it offers children in Chicago.

I have worked in different age groups throughout the Primary School and led different curricular areas in those age groups such as Information and Communications Technology, Science and International Primary Curriculum. In September 2014 I began leading the International Primary Curriculum through which we teach history, geography and social studies in Key Stage 2. This school year I became Key Stage 2 Leader in addition to my role as a Year 3 teacher.

I enjoy working here because all of the staff members truly have a passion for teaching and are committed to the development of the children and the school. We know that to prepare the children for the future, we must instill in them a love of learning from the start and provide them with a skillset that can be applied to anything they will encounter as they grow. BISC’s commitment to preparing each individual child for a future in the global marketplace is truly inspiring. I get to come to work each morning and work beside some of the most motivated and enthusiastic teachers I have ever encountered, and it makes coming to work fun for both me and the children!

I, like the children that attend BISC South Loop, have a very international background. My mother is from England but was brought up in the Middle East due to my grandfather’s job; my father is from Wisconsin, and I was brought up in Scotland with my two sisters. I understand how important it is to encourage children to develop into global citizens due to my international experiences.

Growing up in Scotland, I was able to pursue many of my passions; I was able to learn to play the clarinet from a professional musician and take part in my high school debate team in meets across Scotland. I have also danced from a young age, and I have been lucky enough to study many different genres such as Highland, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Street and Hip-Hop. While here in Chicago I have also been able to take classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and develop my artistic abilities alongside some of the great Chicago artists.
