Grade 6 and 8 students have been reintroduced to the Science Laboratory.
They discovered the hottest part of a Bunsen flame using tongs and a a length of wire.
They also attempted to heat 100ml of water to 110℃. Impossible you might say and the students know that too, now.
They seemed to enjoy the learning.
Mr. Rico’s homeroom advisory decorated the hallway bulletin board with positive words to remind ourselves to BE helpful, honest, unique, responsible, and so on.
Welcome to a New School Year
Students have been busy getting settled into their new classes this week and last week. Mr. Rico’s students have completed some introductory activities in their math classes to start off the new year.
Buster and Vitor paired up to have a “Math Talk.” They were working on plotting points on a number line. Mr. Rico instructs students on how be a good “Communicators” as one of the IB learner profiles.
Students shared their “Mathematical Autobiography” with their classmates, writing about their experiences with mathematics so far and what they hope to learn this year.
Grade 6 students completed a textbook scavenger hunt. This helps them to become more familiar with the different sections of their textbook and how to use them.
Setting Expectations for the Year
Grade 7 students had discussions in groups about their classroom expectations. Each group came up with a list of things they want to be implemented in class to foster a positive learning environment.
As an introductory activity in Mr. Rico’s classes, students selected one object from a tin of small metal charms (including a turtle, a clock, a pencil, a ruler, a dragonfly, and many more). Each student then explained how that object represented themself and what they are looking forward to in math class this year.
