Dear Parents,

As we are approaching the end of Term 1, the school is busily preparing for Qatar National Day on Wednesday, 13 December and making final tweaks to next term’s calendar.

On Tuesday, 5 December, the Friends of Compass School (FCS) met to discuss next term’s events.  The school plans to host a movie afternoon for the students on the Wednesday, 21 February 2018 and a ‘Wake up and Shake up’ wellness morning for parents in March.  School trips have also been scheduled on the calendar.  We plan to send our usual, ‘What’s On’ to parents shortly.  This will be followed by a Spring Term calendar which will give parents an overview of the whole term.  Please be informed that there are many other events which take place in the classrooms – teachers will communicate these to parents via the weekly Learning Letter.

Last week, Year 4A shared some of their IPC learning in their class assembly.  The assembly was a conclusion to the children’s learning about the human body and the purpose of the skeleton.  The students very much enjoyed Ms. Doyle’s special appearance as a pile of clothing (as she wasn’t supported by her skeleton).  Confidence and clarity of line delivery were both paramount in this assembly, well done to all our 4A students. Also on Thursday, the Year 2A children communicated their learning about holidays, following their IPC unit work, ‘Hooray! Let’s Go on a Holiday’.  As part of this unit, the children travelled to Al Sharq Hotel where they researched how hotels operate and how the staff ensure a stay at the hotel is a happy, memorable experience.  The children also shared their literacy work linked to, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch.'  The children were very confident and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share their learning with the school.

Congratulations to our Year5/6 Boys’ Football Team who received gold medals in assembly on Thursday.  They competed against ten other schools at the Aspire Dome, coming in first place.  We are very proud of their success.  Well done, Boys.

I would also like to take this opportunity to mention another of our talented Gharaffa students, Lujain Assamman, in Year 6 who represented Compass International School Doha at the end of November in the under 12’s Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) competition. Lujain is currently ranked in first place (this is the second year in a row).   At the competition she had to play four matches to reach the final, unbelievably, she aced every match which demonstrates her exceptional talent for this sport.  She will now be competing in the final in April 2018.  The school is very grateful to Lujain who plans to gift the prize to the school.  As the family are leaving the school at the end of term, we plan to recognise Lujain’s achievements in our PE department.  More information will follow.  Thank you once again to Lujain and her family’s generous donation, we wish them all the best of luck in April.  We will be sending along a representative from the school to support her at the finals.

On a final note, please remember that Wednesday, 13 December is Qatar National Day.  It would be great if all our children could either attend school in National Dress or in clothing related to our host country, Qatar.  The Arabic Team are currently busy preparing for the day.  It promises to be a day of celebration with the opportunity for our students to find out more about the country in which we live.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Kind regards,

Karen Wilson
