Luckily, the sandstorm subsided and our Year 5 children departed happily for the desert on Tuesday morning.
Children from all three Compass schools congregated at the Gharaffa campus where they were transported to the dunes for activities and a night under the stars. The children were exhausted when they returned to school yesterday but were keen to share their adventure and indulge in a few slices of pizza. Thank you to Mr Hannon and Mrs Bowness for organising this event and all the teachers and staff who supported this trip. Hopefully, the school has created a happy, memorable Arabian experience for your child.
This week, the school has competed in two Basketball events. On Sunday, our Year 3 girls played at DESS against 5 other schools, bringing home a silver medal. Our Year 4 girls fought for a medal at Qatar Foundation on Tuesday just missing bronze by a couple of points, coming in fourth place. Well done girls. It is wonderful to hear that other schools in Doha now view Compass, Gharaffa as serious competition. Please view our PE section in this newsletter for further information.
In IPC this term, our Year 6 students have been studying fairground rides. On Monday, they had the opportunity to visit Gondolania an indoor fairground at Villagio to explore the mechanisms and designs of different rides. The children thoroughly enjoyed this learning experience. Thank you to Mr Higgins and the team this event.
This term, our Year 1 children are studying Flowers and Insects as part of their science IPC unit. Three of our Year 1 classes have visited Rosa Hazzad Plant Nursery this week, with one remaining class on Sunday. The children had a great time learning about how different plants grow, including cucumbers, paprika and aubergines. The children had an opportunity to see the huge fridge where all the produce is stored, look at various irrigation systems and learn about how the water is supplied to the nursery. The grand finale for the children was when they were allowed to plant their own small Busy Lizzie. Thank you to Mr Pegrum, the Year 1 team and parents for creating such a valuable learning experience.
Preparations for our school production, Oliver, are well underway. I had the opportunity to view part of this week’s rehearsal. The acting is probably the best I’ve seen in my many years of teaching and there are still a few rehearsals left on the calendar. We obviously have some exceptionally talented students, teachers and learning assistants at Gharaffa. Parents are invited to watch the show on 10th and 11th April at 5.30pm. All parents are welcome.
On behalf of the team, I hope you have a relaxing weekend.
