Derek Lyon

PE Teacher

Originally from Scotland, I graduated from Moray House Institute of Education, University of Edinburgh in 1999 and moved to England where I taught for 2 years. In 2001, I got the travel bug and wanted to live in a warmer climate and was lucky enough to get a job teaching PE at Wingate School in Tenerife, Canary Islands. I had 5 amazing years over there but then wanted to try somewhere new. I had friends who had moved to Qatar and were raving about it and in 2006 I made the move to the Middle East. I had 10 amazing years in Dukhan but felt it was time to move on but I was still very keen to stay in Qatar.

When the opportunity to work at Compass International School Doha became available in 2016 I jumped at the chance to get on-board. From working in the country, I was fully aware of the sporting pedigree the school had and was excited by the prospect of working with the students. I then discovered the benefits of being part of the Nord Anglia ‘family’ and it opens so many doors to work in different parts of the world when I one day choose to move on from Qatar (after the FIFA World Cup in 2022 of course).

Living in Qatar for so long has given me so many great memories so far. I met my wife here and got married in 2014. We live in Doha with my 2 dogs, Royal a Siberian Husky and Audi a cross between a German Shepherd and a Saluki. My main passion outside of teaching is football and I spend a great deal of time watching and being involved in the Qatar Community Football League. One of my main hobbies is collecting sports memorabilia, particularly football boots. I have been collecting football memorabilia for around 12 years but started to focus on football boots in the last 7 years. In my collection I have around 350 pairs and its growing all the time. Social media plays a huge part in collecting with Instagram being the platform that I choose to spend most time on. Boots from my collection have been on display at various exhibitions around the world and through collecting I have been lucky enough to meet some of the all-time great footballers, and recently had an article published in The Boot Bible .

Being Scottish, I also love the sport that we gave to world, Golf. Playing here in Qatar has meant getting use to the sand golf course of Dukhan and Messaid which offer a totally different experience to playing on grass. From the age of 10, golf has been a fun pastime for me but like so many people who play it can be extremely frustrating. I currently have a handicap of 7 but can’t remember the last time I actually played to anywhere near that……
