Simon Porter

Simon Porter

Director of Learning

Simon studied Physics at the University of Bristol before studying trumpet for four years at the Royal College of Music. He worked for six years as a trumpet teacher and performer in the West Midlands before returning to Physics to teach. He has been teaching Physics for 21 years in British State schools and International schools in Peru, Papua New Guinea, Norway, the USA, Poland and now in Qatar.

Simon hopes to start a “Funk” band and beginner brass group here in Doha in support of his wife Alison who is Head of Music in the school. He has written extensively for the Times Educational supplement and wrote a short section of Professor Deborah Eyres’ recent book on “High Performance Learning”. He was also the first teaching fellow at Nord Anglia University, the training arm of Nord Anglia Education.

Simon has three children at University studying Art, Physics and Mechanical engineering. He is a passionate Nottingham Forest supporter (twice European champions!) and has a running joke in his lessons about his dislike of dogs. Simon tries to make his lessons fun and challenging and hopes to help other teachers in Doha to do the same via his role as Director of Learning.
