Secondary Curriculum Leader and Geography Teacher, Madinat Khalifa

My current role at Madinat Khalifa is to teach Geography and History and I am really enjoying teaching a range of subjects and learning new skills.  Over the years, I have taught many different subjects and this is now proving to be a useful experience.

This is the first time I have worked abroad and I am enjoying meeting and working with people from different countries.  The school has a lovely atmosphere and both children and staff have been very welcoming.  I have really enjoyed hearing about other teachers' careers and experiences.

I have been in teaching almost 25 years and have taught in Further and Higher education, Secondary and just recently Primary.  I have worked the longest in Further Education, where I worked my way up from a part time lecturer to a Faculty Director.  My role was to manage a wide range of programs from Science and Social Science to Motor Vehicle, Horticulture and Floristry.  I was responsible for appointing and managing over 35 staff, budgets, curriculum planning, pastoral care and discipline as well as health and safety.  I then moved to an inner city comprehensive in Birmingham in the UK as Head of Science and faced a new set of challenges.  I have an honours degree in Biology and I hold PGCE's in both Further Adult and Higher Education and in Secondary Teaching and have trained as a subject learning coach in Science and in Health and Safety.

I moved to Qatar about 2 years ago with my husband.  One of the main attractions of moving here, besides the experience of living and working abroad, was the opportunity to travel which is my big passion.  This year I have visited Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Bali and Oman and I hope to add India and Sri Lanka to that list before the end of the year.

When the weather is cooler, I enjoy walking and I also love reading and often have two or three books on the go at the same time.  I like novels and also read autobiographies and books about science.  While I am on holiday I enjoy seeking out and reading a book set in the country I am visiting.

I have two grown up daughters who are living and working in the UK.
