However, I always had a great desire to teach, and therefore I then completed a PGCE at the University in Oxford, UK. I spent 8 years as a language teacher at a secondary school there and during my time at the school, took on various leadership roles before becoming an Assistant Head Teacher at a Girls’ school in Birmingham, where I spent a further two and half years.
I love travelling to new countries and having lived in Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland, where I attended the University of Geneva, I was eager to explore the possibility of working in an International school to enable me to move abroad again. My sister Patrice is currently a Primary school teacher in Abu Dhabi, therefore this was an ideal time to move to the UAE.
It has been a privilege to have been appointed the World Languages Leader this year and I am delighted to be able to work with the Deputy Head of Languages to ensure that we provide an outstanding language provision for both Advanced and Second language learners. We have a wonderful, exceptionally talented Language Team and I look forward to working with them in my new role.
My wish is for all children to reach their full potential and I encourage them, in all that I do, to go beyond what they “assume” they are capable of achieving. I believe that if you “shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you land among the stars“ is a great attitude to have in life!
In my teaching, I encourage children to view language learning as a jigsaw puzzle. At first nothing makes sense, but as they learn new words and grammar constructions, more and more pieces of the jigsaw puzzle fit together until the whole picture is no longer hidden from view.
I also believe that listening to the children’s views and finding out how best they learn is critical for them to enjoy and progress in the subject.
Outside of teaching, I love keeping fit and active. I enjoy swimming, hiking and yoga and visiting new places. I also love learning new languages and completed a GCSE recently in Spanish. Hoping to learn Arabic next!!!
