LIVE from the MIT-Nord Anglia STEAMFest

British School of Guangzhou students travelled to Boston last week to participate in the MIT-Nord Anglia STEAMFest. The weeklong event immersed students in everything related to science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) with leading experts and researchers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Students joined 104 others from 25 Nord Anglia Education schools globally for a programme designed by MIT and Nord Anglia Education experts. Working with professors and researchers from the university, students took part in innovative hands-on workshops in bioengineering, robotics, and coding to music production, gaming and virtual reality.

BSG's STEAM Team wasted no time getting straight into the activities at MIT. Day 1 saw the students making slime before taking a tour of the Koch Cancer Institute to explore science and art! They also made good friends with students from the other NAE schools, especially Hong Kong and Cambodia, who were on the same flight.

Day 2 was Pirate Training Day. Students created bows and arrows using intricate engineering to find out whose would fire the furthest. They also had a go at fencing by producing swords and armour out of tin foil, which could be connected electronically to record hits/points.

We also received the amazing news that BSG won the science quiz out of all 25 NAE schools!

Through days 3 and 4, students were programming their own adafruit circuit playgrounds, having a full tour of MIT and being treated to a chemistry magic show!

The inspiring programme gives students a taste of MIT’s practical, hands-on approach to problem solving. During the week, our students will build and control underwater robots that collect samples of water quality in the Charles River, design and programme their own computer games, and test and make genetically modified foods. They will also tour MIT and Harvard to get a taste of student life at these prestigious universities.
