Staff Profiles: Richard Marwood

Year 3 Learning Leader

I have spent the majority of my life living in Devon in a small town called Paignton. I attended a local Primary, as well as a grammar school, before attending Marjon University in Plymouth. Here I gained my Bachelor of Education teaching qualification with a 2:1 degree classification. Immediately after finishing my degree I took the decision to take a month out and live in Kenya, teaching in a charity school alongside Kenyan teachers where I implemented parts of the British curriculum to young Kenyan children. I found this experience hugely rewarding and it gave me further desire to begin my own teaching career.

In September 2012 I joined the teaching staff at Collaton St Mary Primary school, in my hometown of Paignton. Here I taught in Year 4 for two years, developing my confidence in all areas of teaching and identifying the teaching style which I feel most comfortable and confident with. As part of my teaching role I also became PE coordinator in school, responsible for organising sports days, swimming galas and coaching various sporting teams.

In my final year our Year 6 football team completed an unbeaten season, which culminated in playing a cup final at Torquay United’s football ground, which we won to claim the quadruple. Earlier this year I took the decision to continue my teaching career abroad, to combine my passions for teaching and travelling to new cultures and countries. I now look forward to continuing my teaching journey at BSG next year, and hopefully for years to come.

As previously mentioned, sport is a prominent hobby of mine and I enjoy being active in any way possible, both in and out of school. I currently play for an 11-a-side football team and have in the past coached a 7-a-side football team. Aside from sport I relish any opportunity to travel to new countries and areas, which I have not visited before. In the last two years alone I have been to Kenya, Spain, Germany and France! I hope to continue visiting different areas and cultures in the coming years. In the future I hope to continue teaching for many years to come and perhaps even one day become a Headteacher.
