Steve Cottrell

Deputy Head of Primary (Curriculum)

I started my career in education when I was a teaching assistant in Cardiff before completing my PGCE and then gaining my first teaching position as a Reception teacher in Bristol. After 4 years, working across the Primary age range I made the move to the Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, where I then spent 6 years teaching and leading across the 3-11 age range.

During my career I have held a number of leadership positions including Year Leader, Head of Curriculum Team for Maths and Computing and led staff development through an innovative ‘Learning Leader’ role at the Alice Smith School. I am excited to be at the British School of Guangzhou, as its core values of respect, responsibility, commitment and integrity, as well as the drive to develop a love of learning, are all reflections of my own educational philosophies.

I am a keen musician and have recently started learning to play the piano. I have also been involved in amateur theatre work, both onstage in annual pantomimes, or through directing and backstage work. I love to travel and see more of our amazing world. I also love spending time with friends and family, visiting the cinema, cooking at home, or chilling out with a good book!
