Staff Profiles: Charlotte Giles

Head of History & Years 9-10

I have been teaching in England for 5 years, working in a Secondary School in Wetherby, UK, specialising in History and Sociology. Throughout this time I have been steadily increasing my role within the Humanities department and the school. Some of my achievements have been delivering staff development sessions, securing a £10,000 grant for the school and jointly leading both the Sociology department and the History department to their highest results ever. I am also proud of my pastoral achievements, including running a form for 4 years and being a house leader.

I took the decision to come to the British School of Guangzhou because I was looking for a new challenge in a dynamic learning environment.  The idea of teaching in totally different surroundings appealed to me as a way to stretch and refine my pedagogy. I was also eager to take on more responsibility by leading a department, with the intention of bringing new ideas to the discipline of History and the way that it is promoted within school.

Some of my interests include literature and film. I am an avid reader, particularly of  Japanese and Russian fiction but would choose George Orwell as my favourite author. I love film and spend as much time as I can either visiting the cinema or catching up on classics. I enjoy yoga and swimming and try to attend sessions as often as possible.

I aspire to continue working within the education sector, increasing my knowledge and developing my practice as I take on more whole school responsibility.
