Staff Profile: Ms. K. Charlesworth

Ms. K. Charlesworth

ASN Teacher

Ms. Charlesworth graduated from Brunel University in 1996 with a BA (Hons) in Drama and completed a PGCE in English the following year. She taught English and Drama across all three key stages in UK secondary schools, holding the post of Deputy Head of English before specializing in EAL and obtaining a Trinity Cert. TESOL qualification.

Since moving to Hong Kong in 2010, Ms. Charlesworth has held the position of EAL and Support Coordinator at an international secondary school, whilst continuing to teach English up to IGCSE. She has extensive experience in developing students’ English language skills, as well as supporting and managing students with a range of additional needs, including SLDs, ADHD and ASD. She is currently close to completing a Masters degree in English Studies at City University of Hong Kong.

As an experienced teacher and coordinator of EAL and Additional Needs, I am very much looking forward to supporting and building trusting relationships with NAIS students and their families in both their personal and academic journeys.

I specialise in teaching students who need carefully structured activities and assignments, creative ways of explaining ideas and motivational teaching.  My approach towards students is considered to be highly individualised and nurturing. Humour is also a feature of my teaching (I hope!) and I firmly believe that when students are enjoying their learning and are engaged with the teacher, they are far more likely to learn and thrive.

I am an avid reader and have always tried to cultivate an enthusiasm for reading in my students. Again, I hold firm in my belief that being read to from a young age is more beneficial to a child’s educational development than any other type of extra instruction in those precious childhood years.

I took time out from teaching when I had my daughters, and cofounded a successful music and drama group for babies and pre-schoolers. So whilst I may be a secondary school teacher, you will find I am also skilled in the art of action songs and can do a first-rate Hokey Cokey!
