Staff Profile: Nicola Dickson

Nicola Dickson

Reception Class Teacher

I have been teaching for 8 years, however, this was not my first career choice, although it is undoubtedly the best. I completed an honours degree in Psychology and went on to work for the public sector. I then trained and worked as a fitness and sports instructor for some years before deciding that the children I coached were the main reason I kept doing it. From then, I applied for a PGDE which I completed at University of Strathclyde. I spent a year teaching Year 1 before moving into Early Years and discovered my absolute passion for it. In addition to my teaching qualification, I have certificates in sports coaching, teaching English as a foreign language and a range of training in many aspects of early years practice.

When I learned there was a British School in Houston, my interest was sparked. Having visited family in Houston for many years, I already knew I loved the city. When an Early Years job became available I really did everything I could to get it. Six months after my interview I was sitting on a plane headed for Texas and have never looked back.

When I am not teaching I like to feed my adventurous spirit by travelling, especially road trips. I love music and as well as playing piano, I also love to watch live music and go to festivals. I enjoy spending time outdoors and while I am no expert in any, I enjoy running, cycling and playing tennis.

What the students say about me...

"Miss Dickson is very nice and very kind because she helps us if we get stuck."

"She teaches us new things and does nice writing."

"She does lots of fun things and we she takes us to do our learning all over the school."

"She gets me the things I need and takes us on trips."

"She teaches us phonics and how to know the letters and write them."

"When I go home I talk about Miss Dickson."

"She smiles all the time."

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

I like the international aspect and that everyone, the children, the families and staff, all bring something different to the school.
