Charlotte Holmes

EAL Coordinator

I obtained a BA Joint Honours Degree in French and Hispanic studies from the University of Birmingham, U.K., in 2005.  Shortly after this I decided to try my hand at teaching and trained for and achieved a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.  Having thoroughly enjoyed my CELTA course, I went on to pursue formal teacher training through a work based training route at a boys’ grammar school in Birmingham.   I then spent my first year as a Newly Qualified Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages at the Sixth Form College Solihull near Birmingham.

In 2008, I took a break from teaching to pursue an MA in Spanish Literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.  This was a wonderful experience and, by the time I had completed the two-year course, I had fallen in love with Spain and did not want to leave.  I therefore spent an additional year in Madrid teaching English in a private language school.  In 2011, I was lucky enough to be able to move to Germany, where I spent three years teaching English at a German school.  I moved to Houston to be with my husband in 2015 and have been privileged enough to have been working at the British International School Houston since August 2016.

I met my husband, who is originally from Houston, in Germany in 2012.  We moved here in 2015 and I am really enjoying all that Houston has to offer, particularly the food scene and the sunshine!  I am passionate about languages, especially Spanish, and also speak French and German.  In my free time I enjoy dancing and playing tennis, as well as spending time with my new family.

This school is different to all others I've worked at because...

BISH is a fabulous learning environment where students are encouraged to be independent thinkers.  As teachers here, our job is to give our learners the tools to think and learn for themselves, which are skills they can apply to all disciplines.
