Moving to Houston to live and work was a fantastic opportunity for me, both personally and professionally.  I was intrigued by the challenge of working and living in a new country; teaching such a diverse group of children; and opening myself up to new life experiences.  I had lived all my life in the UK, studying both my degree and PGCE at the University of Worcester.  After gaining my PGCE in 2010, I taught at a Primary School on the outskirts of Birmingham for three years.  During that time, I taught in Year 6 and held the post of ICT Co-ordinator.

Houston was a city that I had never visited, but the more I read about it, the more I knew it would be somewhere I would enjoy working and living.  I was right!

I began teaching in 2003 after qualifying from Liverpool John Moores’ University. Since that time I have worked in a range of Primary schools across the North of England and my most recent post was in Bangkok, Thailand. During my career I have taken on extra roles and responsibilities, leading the year group, curriculum and assessment across Key Stage 2.

I have always wanted to teach in the USA and when the opportunity arose in Houston it was the perfect opportunity. I am looking forward to being part of a very exciting adventure at BISH.

Whilst studying for my BA in Drama at the University of Manchester, I ran drama workshops within Youth Offenders Institutes which led me to working with children. After my degree, I continued by studies in Manchester to gain a PGCE in Primary Education there. After moving back to my home town of Leeds, I taught Years 1, 3 and 5 whilst studying part time for my Masters in Professional Development in Action Research in Teaching and Learning. Through this I wrote my dissertation focused upon leading my peers in developing a new method for assessing science. As a result of this I was given a Teaching and Learning Responsibility for Science.

I am also involved in Girl Guiding and through this was selected to represent the UK in Malawi where I trained the Chief Guide. This led to my desire to work abroad and combined with my loves of travelling and teaching brought me to Houston.

After completing my Biology degree and PGCE in 1999, I started teaching Year 1 and 2 in a rural village school near Bath. Being the oldest child of four, I always knew that I wanted to be  a teacher and I was very good at organising my siblings! During my time teaching in Bath, I met my husband David, and in 2001 I moved up to York. I taught in Selby, a larger inner city school, which was a great contrast to my previous school. After a year, we moved to Cheshire, North-West England, for David’s job. I taught Reception, Year 1 and 2, and took various management roles before being appointed Senior Teacher. My daughter, Annabel, was born in 2008 and shortly afterwards we relocated to London.

In London, I taught at a large Primary school in Claygate, in Years 1-6, and was appointed Assistant Head. In 2012 David’s job took us to The Hague, The Netherlands, where my son William was born. I taught at the International School, The Haagsche Schoolvereeniging, teaching different classes from Reception to Year 6. This was a great introduction to the IPC, International Primary Curriculum, and teaching international students from all over the world. In 2014 we moved to Houston, where I was excited to have the opportunity to teach at BISHouston. Now, I am looking forward to the exciting developments of the curriculum and teaching in our new location.
