Moving to Houston to live and work was a fantastic opportunity for me, both personally and professionally.  I was intrigued by the challenge of working and living in a new country; teaching such a diverse group of children; and opening myself up to new life experiences.  I had lived all my life in the UK, studying both my degree and PGCE at the University of Worcester.  After gaining my PGCE in 2010, I taught at a Primary School on the outskirts of Birmingham for three years.  During that time, I taught in Year 6 and held the post of ICT Co-ordinator.

Houston was a city that I had never visited, but the more I read about it, the more I knew it would be somewhere I would enjoy working and living.  I was right!

I began teaching in 2003 after qualifying from Liverpool John Moores’ University. Since that time I have worked in a range of Primary schools across the North of England and my most recent post was in Bangkok, Thailand. During my career I have taken on extra roles and responsibilities, leading the year group, curriculum and assessment across Key Stage 2.

I have always wanted to teach in the USA and when the opportunity arose in Houston it was the perfect opportunity. I am looking forward to being part of a very exciting adventure at BISH.

I began my teaching career ten years ago after gaining my BA in Primary Education from university.  Since starting I have worked as a Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 teacher.  I have always enjoyed working with younger children and how every day offers so much enjoyment and variation.  Before moving to the British International School of Houston, I was Literacy Leader and Phase Leader for four years.  This allowed me to implement new initiatives in the teaching of Literacy which is something that I have always had an interest in.

Whilst studying for my BA in Drama at the University of Manchester, I ran drama workshops within Youth Offenders Institutes which led me to working with children. After my degree, I continued by studies in Manchester to gain a PGCE in Primary Education there. After moving back to my home town of Leeds, I taught Years 1, 3 and 5 whilst studying part time for my Masters in Professional Development in Action Research in Teaching and Learning. Through this I wrote my dissertation focused upon leading my peers in developing a new method for assessing science. As a result of this I was given a Teaching and Learning Responsibility for Science.

I am also involved in Girl Guiding and through this was selected to represent the UK in Malawi where I trained the Chief Guide. This led to my desire to work abroad and combined with my loves of travelling and teaching brought me to Houston.

I knew I wanted to be a teacher from the age of 15, when I completed work experience in my local infant school. I aspire to be like my year three teacher; kind, caring and approachable. My aim is for the children in my class to feel safe, happy, confident and have a love of learning.

I graduated from the University of Winchester in 2011, with a degree in Primary Education specialising in Drama. Since then, I have worked in schools in Surrey and London, teaching year one up to year 6. Most recently I taught year one in a London infant school, leading Geography across KS1.

My teaching career started in Kingston Upon Hull, England in 2005 after graduating from The University of Hull. After successfully completing three years in the East Riding of Yorkshire, I moved to Bristol and taught in a multicultural inner city school for four years. Every day presented a challenge, but in the long run it made me into a much better teacher and I am thankful for the experience.

After spending most Summers Holidays in the United States, I finally moved with my wife to Houston in August 2012.  When we were offered our jobs, we both knew instantly that we wanted to experience something different and where better to do that than Texas!

I obtained my Bachelor of Education (honours) degree from the University of Plymouth in 2011. During my time at University I undertook a range of school placements, including a school in New York. This is when I realised that my ambition and future goal would be to move to the USA after gaining some teaching experience. This led me to seek opportunities in the USA and when I heard about British International School Houston I was very excited. I had no hesitation in making the move to Houston and begin my new stateside adventure.
