Originally from Scotland, I studied BSc (Hons) Laser Physics and Optoelectronics at the University of Strathclyde. After working for a year at IBM, I decided to complete a PGCE in Secondary teaching and worked in Glasgow for a few years before I felt the need to work in a different teaching environment and explore the world a little, which is why I took up the position of Head of Physics at a British school in Dubai. I worked at Jumeirah College for four years, teaching GCSE and A Level, and then moved onto JESS, this was mainly to gain experience teaching the International Baccalaureate. After 5 years at JESS we took the decision as a family to move back to Scotland and after being there for a year I wanted to explore again. I have always heard of Nord Anglia and have read about their successful teaching institutions all over the world. So when a Physics position was advertised in Houston, I decided that this is the job for me, and the perfect school for my children. I am an experienced Physics practitioner with 12 years of teaching experience, which includes 3 years of working as an examiner for the IB and IGCSE.
I have a passion for books and spend my free time reading novels and scientific journals to keep up to date with recent advancements; I also like to research about new teaching tools. I enjoy travelling and exploring historical sites when on holiday and of course I do like to socialise and regularly host dinner parties. Cooking and baking are some of my other hobbies. I have participated in community service and charity events to help raise funds whether this is through a simple bake sale, The Pink Walkathon for Breast cancer awareness or working with Dubai Cares by providing shoeboxes and packages for people who are in need. Whilst in Scotland I have worked with children and adults with special needs and have always found this to be a satisfying and spiritually rewarding experience. I consider the family unit to be an important aspect in ones life and enjoy planning and spending quality time with mine as much as I can.
What the students say about me
‘I am grateful for your hard work, dedication and commitment you have put in throughout the IB Physics course’
‘I never liked Physics but you teach in a way that I understand and because of that, I do well, so I owe it all to you’
‘Thanks for the really chilled Physics lessons! Definitely one of my most interesting and surprisingly inspiring lessons’
This school is different to all others I've worked at because...
The British International School of Houston epitomizes everything that a young adult should be confident, caring, intellectual and independent. It opens up many doors for students and supports them in achieving the goals that they set for themselves. It is a prestigious, high achieving and inspiring school that allows students to develop into successful individuals. I believe technology enhances the learning process and provides an open perspective to teaching; the facilities at the new campus will provide state of the art technology.
Students of all abilities are entitled to a high quality education not only academic excellence but also development of all aspects of the student’s persona through a challenging curriculum, access to co-curricular activities and guidance through a strong pastoral system.
At BISH, they challenge and encourage students to develop independent thought to allow them to become successful life-long learners. In order to achieve this we work closely together to support the collective needs of each and every student. I always take the opportunity to empower students, encouraging them to challenge and probe, and explore abstract concepts experimentally and the school promotes this type of pedagogy.
