Paula Cooper

Teacher of Science and Head of Year 9

I studied at the University of Manchester and graduated with an Honours degree in 2002. After completing my degree I worked at the university in recruitment before deciding that I wanted to train be a teacher. I moved back to my home town in Staffordshire to complete my PGCE.

My first teaching post was in Stoke on Trent teaching Science. I spent 9 fantastic years at the same school which went through many changes during my time there. This included merging with another school and completing a move to a brand new state of the art building.

After working as a class teacher for 5 years I decided I wanted more of a challenge and a whole school role so I decided to take the step to move into middle leadership. I took on a pastoral responsibility which I thoroughly enjoyed. During the last academic year I realised that I wanted a change and I decided to move to test my skills in a completely different environment at the British International School of Houston.

When I am not teaching I enjoy travelling. I have always had a keen interest in the U.S and have travelled here several times prior to moving here and I am looking forward to seeing much more of the country and surrounding areas. I am also a big fan of travelling around Europe but this is something I will be doing a little less of for the foreseeable future. I enjoy watching a variety of sports and am hoping to see as much American sport as possible, as well as trying to catch up on some football from back home.

What the students say about me...

"Miss Cooper makes Biology one of my favourite subjects as she makes it interesting and always makes us involved in our learning as she doesn’t stand at the front and just speak to us, she makes us do activities and discussions to make sure we understand."

"Miss Cooper is creative and organised, she makes the lessons fun but challenges us with every activity and helps us to become independent learners."

"Miss Cooper is amazing in lessons, she is very enthusiastic and focussed on our learning, she gets us to work together and gets us interested in Biology"

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

The British International School of Houston is a great place to work. The students here are the polite and enthusiastic about learning. It is a pleasure to teach and facilitate their learning. They have a real desire to succeed which is inspiring.
