I attended Exeter University and graduated with a Combined Honours BA Degree in Spanish and Italian. As part of my degree I also took 3 years of Catalan, in which I achieved a Generalitat de Catalunya Government proficiency certificate. During my degree I spent a year living in Northern Italy where I studied at the Università degli Studi di Trento. Throughout this time I also spent an extensive amount of time on and off between England and Connecticut working for Connecticut State Grange, a Non-Governmental Organisation, as a Director of Children’s Programmes. I went on to work for the University of Exeter as an Education Officer and Events Co-ordinator before moving to Spain to teach English and Italian as a Lecturer at the Universidad de Cordoba.

I am a French native speaker with a passion for languages. I studied English and American literature at university in Lyon, France. After graduating, I moved to Bristol, England, and did a teacher training course at Bristol University. I fell in love with England and lived there for the next 12 years. I taught Languages in schools in Bristol, Nottingham and Sherborne (Dorset). I took a year out in 2010 to teach French in the Alliance Française in Brisbane, Australia. There, I taught all ages, from four year olds to adults. It was a rewarding experience.

My husband and I moved to Houston in April 2014 so we are very new to life in the US. I have always loved teaching languages and I am very excited to be part of the British International School of Houston, where languages are so highly regarded. I think that bringing culture into the classroom is an integral part of language learning and an essential part of High Performance Learning. I feel privileged to teach in such a successful school.

  • Cécile Speter Secondary French Teacher

    Cécile Speter

    Teacher of French

    Cécile Speter

Bonjour! My name is Cécile Speter. I’m originally from Saint Omer, a small town in the north of France, and I have been teaching at the British International School of Houston for three years now. I attended the University of Charles-de-Gaulle in Lille in France where I studied Language, Literature and Civilisation, after first obtaining my Baccalaureate in Science. I also have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Leicester in Secondary Foreign Languages. Prior to my arrival at BISH, I taught in Northamptonshire, England for ten years. I have been Head of French and have worked as a mentor with the University of Leicester to train new teachers starting on the PGCE course.

Teaching is something I love, am passionate about, and find rewarding and fulfilling. I always enjoyed the study of languages, but it was at the age of 17 that I realised that I wanted to become a language teacher. I was visiting a family in North Carolina and found that I enjoyed explaining the French language and discussing French culture with members of the family. Teaching at the British International School of Houston is a dream come true, as it gives me the opportunity to help children learn the language and communication skills needed in an increasingly interconnected, multicultural and multilingual world.

I moved to Houston in November 2014 with my wife, a native Texan, and our cat Fozwhitt (named after an ex Texas Longhorns footballer). I have been lucky enough to work, live and travel throughout South America, Europe and Africa in the fields of Hospitality, Education and for an international pharmaceutical company.

My passion for teaching languages originates from being a teaching assistant in Chile during my gap year at the age of 18. I feel that studying languages enables children to better understand and experience other cultures, to gain a deeper knowledge of their own culture, and to improve linguistic ability in their mother tongue. Instilling the value and importance of languages to children gives me great satisfaction and the enjoyment I gained from my role in Chile led me to become a Secondary French and Spanish teacher. Since December 2010 I have been working at an independent school with a large special needs department in Oxfordshire England.

I have run weekly language clubs and used Spanish to promote clubs for other departments. Since my first year as a teacher I initiated, organised and led several school language trips in England. I also established an extremely successful school exchange to Spain, which has become a highly anticipated annual event.

I took the decision to come to this school for several reasons. Mainly this was due to the positive atmosphere and willingness to learn I saw in classrooms which impressed me when I came to visit. On a more practical level, working here enables me to continue using the experience of the English National Curriculum which I have gained throughout my career.

I have been made to feel welcome here in my first week from both the teachers and pupils and I look forward to continuing my career in such a multicultural school.

Before coming to BISH I worked at a comprehensive school in South London where I had been teaching for four years. During my time there I lead and developed the Spanish curriculum, mentored students and trainee teachers and introduced a number of initiatives such as the Francovision song contest, various MFL spelling bees and a Korean language and culture club. I was also involved in implementing project based learning across the whole school which has allowed students to engage more with their learning and produce high quality products. I have relished the opportunity to be able to guide students to direct and perform a play, publish their own book, hold an art exhibition for the public and much more.

Having trained as a Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Exeter, I completed my teacher training at two schools in Weymouth, Dorset, UK. I then took up a position as a German and French teacher at Winterbourne International Academy in Bristol, UK in 2011. Teaching French and German to GCSE Level, as well as German A-level courses, I really enjoyed running a ‘Mandarin club’ on the side.  During my three years there, I specialized in teaching ‘Gifted and Talented’ students, the teaching of literacy and the development of the NVQ (national vocational qualifications) for languages.
