Staff Profile: Cécile Speter

Cécile Speter Secondary French Teacher

Teacher of French

Bonjour! My name is Cécile Speter. I’m originally from Saint Omer, a small town in the north of France, and I have been teaching at the British International School of Houston for three years now. I attended the University of Charles-de-Gaulle in Lille in France where I studied Language, Literature and Civilisation, after first obtaining my Baccalaureate in Science. I also have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Leicester in Secondary Foreign Languages. Prior to my arrival at BISH, I taught in Northamptonshire, England for ten years. I have been Head of French and have worked as a mentor with the University of Leicester to train new teachers starting on the PGCE course.

Teaching is something I love, am passionate about, and find rewarding and fulfilling. I always enjoyed the study of languages, but it was at the age of 17 that I realised that I wanted to become a language teacher. I was visiting a family in North Carolina and found that I enjoyed explaining the French language and discussing French culture with members of the family. Teaching at the British International School of Houston is a dream come true, as it gives me the opportunity to help children learn the language and communication skills needed in an increasingly interconnected, multicultural and multilingual world.

I enjoy trying new things in my free time. I love travelling, and when I can I try to spend my holidays in countries I’ve never been to before. I visited Costa Rica last year and am planning to go to Argentina this year. Music is another love. I play the clarinet, and I have recently started learning the guitar. Finally, I like art and making things with my hands. This past year, I enrolled in pottery and painting classes and had a wonderful time!

What the students say about me...

"Miss Speter is a fun teacher who’s making French my favourite subject!"

"I was nervous because I joined the school in the middle of the year and I had never done French before, but Miss Speter really made me feel welcome and helped me catch up with the rest of the class!"

"I’ve learned so much this year thanks to Miss Speter!"

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

The British International School of Houston is a remarkably caring environment. New students integrate quickly and easily, as the children here are friendly and welcoming. Everyone is open-minded and highly motivated. The focus on learning in a caring, supportive and respectful atmosphere makes BISH a wonderful place to teach!
