Staff Profile: Victoria Henecka

Victoria Henecka

Teacher of MFL

Having trained as a Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Exeter, I completed my teacher training at two schools in Weymouth, Dorset, UK. I then took up a position as a German and French teacher at Winterbourne International Academy in Bristol, UK in 2011. Teaching French and German to GCSE Level, as well as German A-level courses, I really enjoyed running a ‘Mandarin club’ on the side.  During my three years there, I specialized in teaching ‘Gifted and Talented’ students, the teaching of literacy and the development of the NVQ (national vocational qualifications) for languages.

I then moved to Scotland and started working as a maternity cover at Alford Academy in the Scottish Highlands. There I taught French, Spanish and German for Scottish Standard Grades and Highers. I have now come from Munich International School in Bavaria (Germany), where I taught German Language Acquisition for the MYP. I now look forward to working at the British International School of Houston. I love teaching languages to students of all ages and I believe in making learning fun, exciting and challenging and hope to do so at BISH. I am excited to work at a school, which puts the students at the center of all learning and teaching.

With three nationalities and two mother tongues, I have always loved languages and travelling. My travels have taken me to many parts of Asia, some of Africa and also to Russia and of course many countries in Europe. I have moved to Houston with my partner Alberto (Spanish) and my little cute rabbit Monty (German).  We are excited to explore the USA and especially the outdoors, as we love watersports, mountain biking and anything else outdoors. Though it may be far, we also hope to go skiing or snowboarding. If I have to spend time indoors, then I read or bake cakes.

What the students say about me

“Frau Henecka plays a lot of games with us and makes the lessons exciting. But you have to follow the rules.”

“ Thank you for helping me when I am stuck , I am not afraid to ask a question in class or to ask for help because I know you will help me and be kind.”

This school is different to all others I've worked at because...

….it is part of a Global Campus of 42 schools and I think this will open up the opportunity for new teaching experiences for me. I also love working at international schools as every student brings a different experience with them and thus enriches my classroom with their knowledge of other cultures. I am looking forward to a new experience, on a new campus with the newest learning technologies available.
