This academic year has seen the development of many new sports at the British International School of Houston.

While our Varsity Boys Soccer have been off winning State Championships, we introduced Varsity Girls Soccer to our programme. After a shaky start to the season, these Girls really came together as a team, won some games, lost some close games, but definitely built upon a foundation that we hope can bring more success next year, having been one place of a Playoff spot this year.

Not to be outdone, our Middle School Boys Soccer squad had a fantastic run of victories too, and lost to only 2 schools during their season, as they put together an impressive wave of results. Due to the demand for Soccer, we are one of the few schools in Houston lucky enough to have a Junior Varsity side, who had a 10 game schedule this year. This group of players certainly produced some good results at the start of their season and we look forward to many of them making the step up to Varsity Soccer next year.

Our Basketball programme has always been a small one, but the Boys who play on our Varsity squad certainly have been starting to produce the kind of Basketball that we are hoping to see, especially with our new shiny Varsity Gym. This year has seen some very close scorelines as the Bulldogs start to fit into the correct divisions of local play. Some of these scorelines have meant we have come close, while other days have seen our team celebrating victories, even if we had to go to over-time to get them! Although we did not have a Middle School Basketball programme this year, we hope that our new intake of students will be keen to start playing this fantastic game, and help build a team that can compete at the Middle School level, and hopefully develop into a High School team.

The Varsity Field Hockey season brought a group of young women together, who had a mixed level of experience playing the game. In a very short period of time, the coaches started putting teams together that were not only competing, but also winning games. Just like the Varsity Boys Basketball programme, this team has a loyal and trusted band of players, who are passionate about the games and would love to see some more youngsters coming though to join the squad. With many of the squad graduating this year, we hope that those who are interested in taking up a new sport, or returning to the game, will join us in August.

Two years ago, we had 23 students participating in our Cross Country programme. Now that number is up to over 50, as our student athletes who used to just come along for fitness training, now come along to compete! More and more times now, the Navy Blue Bulldog shirt can be seen gracing the Top 10 places of many a competition, but even more importantly, students are breaking their personal best times, nearly every week! As our numbers grow, our students are making friends with athletes from other schools, and it is always nice to see our students cheering on athletes other than our own. At the Faith West Meet this year, our HS Boys took 3rd place in the team championships, with Daniel winning the individual race, before jumping straight into the car and going to play Soccer for his local team!

With our beautiful new campus, came our new swimming pool. We hoped to be able to put together a small swim team that would help us get recognised in the local community.  Well… we got recognised! 74 swimmers graced our Swim Team this year, and although it was a steep learning curve for many of our students, everyone had loads of fun and records were set. We hosted our own Meet and realised very quickly that we had a very talented group of swimmers, who we hope will all return next season and help continue to build a swim team that we can be proud of, for a very long time.

Track & Field continues to be one of our most popular sports here at BISH and with our new Track, this year has been no exception. 64 athletes have been running, jumping and throwing their way around the local competitions, and as our numbers grow, so do our results. As we gain more students, the desire to win increases, which means our athletes need to work harder. Unlike many other sports, Track athletes need training when not at school too, and many of our students who thought they were quick or strong, found out that other schools have students who are quicker and stronger. Seeing students from other schools with medals has just fuelled the fire for some of our students to ask for extra training, go for a run in the evening, push-ups before bed and sit-ups in the morning! Track Meets might be long, but for those students who work hard and listen to their coaches, being rewarded with that medal or personal best, makes it all worthwhile.

Three sports that are quickly growing here at BISH, as Middle School Rugby, Varsity Tennis and Varsity Golf. Rugby makes a return to the school calendar, as they compete against 3 local schools. Club rugby is huge in Houston, but our coaches wanted a place where complete beginners could come along and try America’s fastest growing sport for themselves, without having to leave the support of their friends. We knew we had 4 or 5 players, but were amazed that when our team went out for their first game after only 2 training sessions and started scoring try after try against one of the better schools in the district!  Every week, the improvements have been vast, and we look forward to more students joining rugby next year, as we work towards having teams in both Middle School and High School.

Tennis and Golf have always been the sports that you practice away from school and then come back to join your friends to compete against other schools. Amongst our Bulldogs, we have some very talented Tennis players and amazing Golfers. As we settled into our new campus and our school reputation grows, more and more schools are asking to compete against us, and this year, our Tennis and Golf Ambassadors have done us proud in representing the school and ensuring that we can continue to challenge when called upon. Our Golf team opened their first ever competition with a 4th place finish, which will hopefully spark interest in others, and we can get more than one 5-man teams out at all competitions. Tennis is very popular in Houston and with many schools having excellent players, we rely on our our top players to show our younger players what can be achieved. Just like the JV Boys Soccer programme, Tennis was blighted by rainstorms during their season, but we finished mid-table with some wins and some losses, but lots of experience gained and a desire to improve and win more.

GO BULLDOGS!
