Students study early World History with particular focus on the classical civilizations of Europe, China, the Middle East, and India. Students develop close reading and annotating skills, note taking, and listening. They work with primary sources with a focus on analysis. Assessments evaluate essay writing, critical thinking, analysis, and research efforts. Students practice each of these skills in the completion of a research project in the second semester.
Students delve into American History through the study of political, social, and economic themes. Class content begins with post-reconstruction and takes students through the Vietnam and Reagan eras. Study of primary sources continues with the addition of historiography and the study of prominent historians. Students are able to trace changes in American history and demonstrate an understanding of historical trends. Writing continues to develop with a focus on the construction of argumentative essays. Students research an historical topic, practicing for the IB Extended Essay.
Students have the option to study one of three social sciences offered through the International Baccalaureate program: Economics, History, or Psychology. The social science IB curriculum focuses on the study of human interactions in the physical, social, and economic realms. Students practice data collection, analysis, and application in real-world situations. Students develop an appreciation for the diversity of ideas found in the world, preparing them for global citizenship.
The International Baccalaureate social science curriculum continues for each student in his or her chosen field. Students have honed many of their academic skills, and greater depth in concepts and theories is achieved through research, writing and applying analytical skills. Students conduct a major research project in their field of study, applying the skills developed and practiced during their four years of high school.
