NIS School History

The Netherlands Inter-community School (NIS) is one of the oldest schools in Jakarta, celebrating 50 years of outstanding education in 2017.

Starting with humble roots, the school traces its origins to an Indonesian teacher who would teach Dutch children in the back room of her home in Menteng. As the school’s reputation and student numbers continued to grow, a dedicated building was established in the annexes of the Philips Company on Jalan Proklamasi and NIS formally came into existence in 1967.

The school expanded further thanks to the assistance of subsidies from the Dutch government and NIS was relocated to Slipi in 1972. In response to the needs of the expatriate community the school moved once more to Cilandak, a suburb in Southern Jakarta before its final move to its current home in the leafy surrounds of Jalan Jeruk Perut. For almost 20 years the school has continued to grow and evolve, providing world class education to our students.
