The original PlayStation

‘When I was a child we had no PlayStations, iPADs or Smart Phones…we had only three television channels to choose from… we made up games…’ Does this ring a bell?

I was one of those children and yes, I do remember growing up with fond memories. Why? Life was fun – we spent hours outside using our imagination and taking risks (not always well calculated!). We had failure, success, freedom and responsibility and learned how to deal with life. My generation and those who were children before mine produced some of the best risk-takers, thinkers, problem solvers and inventors.

So what do we have in common? We grew up outside (The original PlayStation) exploring the world independently; engaging with our senses in the natural environment, we gained respect for and an understanding of the environment, developed communication skills, leadership, teamwork, physical development and developed our fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.

All these skills are evident when working in the outdoor environment; here at Regents this environment is just as important as the classroom setting, particularly for our younger students. In fact as one mum said to me recently ‘If my child came home looking the same as they did when they left home in the morning I’d wonder what they had been doing. If I spot mud or paint on clothing I can easily start asking questions about their day!’ Scraped knees from falling in the playground, dirty clothes from gardening or playing in the Mud Kitchen or clothing with chalk or paint all show our children do take risks, learn from mistakes and develop so many of our essential life and problem-solving skills.

‘Risk is essential. There is no growth or inspiration in staying within what is safe and comfortable. Once you find out what is best, why not try something else?’Alex Noble
