Regents: A uniquely welcoming environment

  • RISE - an English language programme in Pattaya

As I was walking around the Primary School this morning one thing struck me: how many happy faces there were. Despite this time of year being busy with many varied and often hectic activities: Christmas Concert rehearsals; performances of ‘A Christmas Carol’; Christmas Fair preparations and school-report writing, everybody seemed to be smiling, staff and pupils alike. Undoubtedly the crystal-clear, blue skies and cooling breeze added to the relaxed ambience but nonetheless it was great to be greeted by so much enthusiasm. I have been doing a lot of thinking recently about what makes our school special and I think one of the things for me is this friendly warmth which so many of our pupils and staff display, even amidst the daily hurly-burly of teaching and learning. As Charles Dickens reminds us in ‘A Christmas Carol’,

“ There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”

We strive in many ways to deliver a ‘Challenging Education’ to our pupils and one which builds the whole individual. This can be a complex, extremely involved and busy process. How good it is, that despite these challenges, children and teachers are so often, ‘just plain cheerful’.  Simple things really do make a difference. The congeniality and smiling greetings I so often receive and observe around school help create the unique environment that we all immerse ourselves in every day. As George Eliot once put it,

Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles”.

James Baker, Deputy Head of Primary
