"My appetite for wanting to make a difference in this world started at Regents."

Principal Mike Walton reports on the ‘global citizenship’ reflections of one alumna.

Sometimes when we have visitors, especially inspectors, we discuss how perspectives can differ. I comment that I’ll have one view on school life, my staff may have another, then the students will give them the clearest possible insight.  I believe that the student voice, including that of alumni, is one that tells the true story of any school.

Recently we received an email from one of our former students, reflecting on how her time at Regents had sown the seeds of her self-perception and motivation to have a positive impact on the world around her.  Like so many in our school, her sense of social responsibility burned bright.  Being naturally modest, perhaps it took longer for her to see the tremendous qualities and potential in herself.  Below, in her own words, she describes how the school supported her in that journey of self-discovery.

“All the service and environmental work I did collectively over the years was extremely inspiring. My appetite for wanting to make a difference in this world all started at Regents. I had the opportunity to offer myself to communities in need, via multiple different outlets, which allowed me to start asking questions at a very young age about how I wanted to impact the world around me.

Regents didn't allow me to just sit in a little bubble of ignorance because I was privileged enough to live the good life. Quite the contrary, I was taught that the greater the ability the greater the responsibility.

There is so much potential in everyone, sometimes we just need to get those opportunities to experience how our actions can directly impact our world and then be motivated and encouraged to do more. That was the environment Regents gave to me - one that fostered awareness, but most importantly ACTION, by not letting us stop at just knowing but constantly pushing us to experience what our knowledge meant in the real world, and to think about what we were going to do about it.

I also believe that Regents provides a culture that attracts teachers who truly care for their students and who want to be a positive influence in their lives. This meant that not only was I provided with countless creative extracurricular activities, but I was also surrounded by people who saw the potential in me – even when I couldn’t see it myself.”
