Regents’ students embrace Debate Week!

Batman or superman? Who would you put your money on in the event of a battle between the two? Celebrities – worth every penny they make or overpaid and overrated? Should students be allowed to grade their teachers?
  • Students prepare their speeches at Debate Week

These were the sort of light-hearted topics which students and staff got their teeth into last week as they practiced putting their opinions forward over the course of the school’s annual Debate Week. Twelve teams, each made up of three students (from Years 7 through 13) and one member of staff did an outstanding job of trying to outwit their opponents in a compelling and respectful fashion.

Grace, Year 13 IB student and event leader, commented: “It has been great to see so many students rise to the challenge of these debates. Thanks to the supportive audience of peers and teachers, they have gained new confidence and improved their public speaking skills – all while gaining points for their house!”

Garry Russell, Head of Secondary commented: “The Regent’s Debate Week is another excellent example of how our students develop and lead on their own initiatives. The topics and discussions have been thoroughly engaging and thought-provoking, covering issues such as reality TV and whether teachers should be paid depending on their performance! Of course, being able to converse on such issues in a professional and persuasive manner is crucial to gaining success in the world beyond school. The world leaders of the future start here.”
