Life after 40: A Regents' International Baccalaureate Profile (2)

Yu Jin is another Regents student who this year scored 40 or more points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma – recognised globally as an outstanding achievement. Here she takes her turn to reflect on both her future and her past.

Yu Jin, it must have been quite daunting to receive your results after working so hard on the Diploma for two years?

I received my results through an email from Mr. Miller, our IB coordinator. The email was entitled ‘Your Results!’ with an attachment and so it took me a while to get the courage to open the email, because I was so nervous and kept imagining the worst case scenario where I wouldn’t pass! When I finally checked my results, I was more than happy. I had to check multiple times because I just couldn’t believe these were my set of results!

How do you feel about your future now that your results are in?

I hope that scoring highly in the IB Diploma will allow me to take on the challenge of university life and life beyond! I will be studying Chemical and Biological Engineering at Seoul National University in Korea this autumn. The IB Diploma is a very challenging two-year course; it not only challenges you academically, but also requires you to develop in various other aspects. Thus, I believe that undertaking the IB Diploma Programme itself is an accomplishment that universities will highly recognize.

What are you most looking forward to in terms of the next stage of your education?

Although I’m Korean, I’ve been at Regents for my whole life, and so I’m looking forward to living in a new and different environment. In terms of university life, I’m looking forward to studying independently and choosing my own courses to take. Of course, I’m also excited about meeting new people and making new friends!

What will you miss most about Regents?

I’ll miss everything about Regents: my lifelong friends, the helpful teachers, all the extracurricular activities, and the unbelievably long line every lunchtime at the school café (ha ha!). The most challenging and hard time at Regents was the last two years of doing the IB Diploma Programme, and so perhaps what I’ll miss most is our class of 2014.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I would just like to give some advice to the upcoming Year 13s: enjoy your last year of high school! Take time to study and keep up with coursework deadlines, but more importantly, enjoy your last year here at Regents together with your friends and teachers, no matter how hard IB treats you, because you’ll come to miss it! And congratulations for already finishing half the course, you’re nearly there!
